20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
im a Conservative voter but not really very happy about this, though truth be told id not really give it much thought and just presumed i paid it anyway
apparently after the Olympics, VAT is to be introduced on supplements, not good news eh, what do you all think ?
personally ive already cut down on what i buy because of the price rises on most things, 20% on top of already higher prices will see me seriously reduce what i buy

Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
Yer not good at all!!!
It didn't have vat as it was classed as a food I'm guessing but now they've changed there mind!? I'm not that up on it all and how they'd go about it but I've no doubt there wil be a mass appeal from the supplement companies and retailers! Goverment trying to cash in on a growing lucrative business...
Tax fags yes as there trying to stop people killing them selves (or to make lots of money...) but supplements are making people healthier right!?

Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
I think it's just one of those things. it was bound to happen at some stage, although i assumed i paid it already.
I'm surprised that the government hasn't been more full on in their cuts and taxes. I read about a year ago that if the UK had implemented the same budget as the Irish did in the first year of the crises that the UK would be out of debt oce it was scaled up between the two countries. (the Irish had had another 6-7 drastic budgets since as there was an emergency one coming out every 5-6 months ).
Its hard times all round, I think the UK seems to have avoided a lot of the hardship though(but the tax's and banned substances do piss me right off.)

Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
gutted about this.
Have read that the VAT will NOT apply to MRP that are aimed at slimmers and invalids so could see some rebranding/marketing to get round this. Feasibly every weight gain drink could be aimed at people who have loss a lot of weight due to illness and need to put it back on quickly (i know the hosp gave mate some of these after breaking his jaw). The new anorexic weight gain range perhaps...

Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
I can see the sports supplements brands re-marketing their products to get around the taxes but I fundamentally do not agree with it. I know times are hard and the UK economy requires austerity measures to redress the balance and get us out of the current economic situation. However they should be taxing things to discourage unhealthy behaviour not things that have a positive impact on health.
We hear enough reports on how much of a strain on funds obesity and alcohol fuelled fights costs stake holders in the chain so why oh why Mr Government are you taxing the people who spend their money on being healthy? What next a tax on fruit and vegetables whilst exempting the shelves of muffins, cakes and chocolate we are assaulted by as soon as you walk through the door of your local large supermarket (You know which ones I mean 4 muffins for a £1!)
Enough of the politics..
What are we going to do about it? Is there an ePotition against the proposal already?
On a side note I always have a giggle at Supersize Vs Superskinny. I'm going to hell...I know.

Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
Currently this is a consultation document which means in theory we have until May to contest it . Rest Assured the industry is coming together to fight this . In reality some of this tax will happen but a compromise may be reached as I think they have not thought it through properly and when they realise that it will impossible to police what it for sports and what is for health etc they will give ground .
you too can help by writing to your MP , this is essentially a tax on healthy lifestyles and you should ask you MP why they are taxing healthly pass times in a country with rising obeisty issues and pressure on the health service from lifesyle issues . Point out this tax could end up costing the goverment more indirectly through a decrease in health than it will ever gain .

Man, I hate to keep plugging this line, but I gotta tell you guys I'm so glad I left the UK - just look at the insanity that beholds it. The lack of freedom is becoming so frightening, and it's just becoming one avaricious, extortionate, pessimistic environment that is culminating in a whole lot of negative people as a result. It's such a shame that given our great history, we appear to be on the decline so rapidly in terms of what we're prioritising and the direction we appear to be heading. Glad I got out of this bullshit, and intend to stay out until hopefully it starts to recover from this huge mess its created.
The frustrating thing for me is the lack of people power

Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
This is why i always think outside of the box Adam and vote for the UK independence party. If we had a proper voting system in this country then UKIP would be in parliament for sure.A lot of this madness is down to the EU,not to mention that we have to stump up £50,000,000 a day for them to tell us what to do so no wonder Boy George Osborne has raised VAT on everything.Utter madness!i absolutely loath politicions of the lib/lab/con alliance, scum the lot them!Cameron,Osborne, and Clegg who have never known poverty in their lives haven't got a clue of how to get Britain out of it's current financial state.

I agree with some of what he comes out with to Brun, trouble is,he doesn't deliver what he says.Milliband is right when he says Cameron is the man of many u-turns.But i agree, this is indeed a topic for another thread.I agree with the rise in tax on cigs as they are killing my mum.Not too much tax on booze though as i like a can of guiness now and then.

I'm sure there's a reason why that hasn't been done already. Surely these two animals alone create such a huge sum of money for the government that any attempts to put them out of people's price range further would be adverse to the current situation? Of course I'm just speculating - I haven't a clue on the economical situation and the minefield that is politics.

Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
I have emailed by MP earlier today. This same subject is bein discussed on a few forms. We all need to kick up a stink. Whey protein powder is effectively a food ingredient so how the hell it can be subject to VAT is beyond me. I don't think the powers that be have a clue what it is and why it is used.
Re: 20% VAT on Supplements after Olympics
nice to see they are going ahead with minimum alcohol pricing, hopefully cut down on the amount of kids hanging around parks with 3L bottles of cider

It's going to stop me sitting in my front room in my pants and vest drinking my 3 ltr beast though
Booze is a strange one for me... I think something needs to be done but I would go more on the lines of punishing drunken behaviour and educating people... I think some sort of national ID system would be a good idea to stop kids boozing but tbh since they've brought in the are you 21/25 years old to buy booze I don't see as many kids boozing. Obviosly they can still get peeps to buy them it. I was a kid street drinker but wasn't a little tw*t, so I just see it as one of those thangs at heart but maybe punishing kids parents for those caught might help also?
